Sports Betting Addiction

Sports betting has exploded over the last decade. As legalization spreads state by state, so does the number of people whose relationship with it has crossed into compulsion. The near-constant availability of lines, live in-game betting, and mobile apps means there is never a natural stopping point.

Prop bets have accelerated the problem replacing the natural pause of the final score with an endless stream of micro-decisions that keep the cycle running throughout the game. For many, checking lines becomes the first act of the morning and the last of the night.

Sports betting addiction also hides better than most. Following sports is normal, talking odds has become normal, and an app on a phone looks like every other app. For many, the depth of the problem stays invisible until the financial damage forces it into view.

Meanwhile, users too young for licensed sportsbooks are increasingly finding their way in through prediction markets and other channels that operate outside standard age restrictions.

Am I Addicted to Sports Betting?

  •  Is checking lines or scores one of the first things you do in the morning and the last at night?
  • Do you bet more than you planned, or place bets on games and sports you don’t even care about, just to have action?
  • After a losing day, do you increase your bets to win it back?
  • Have you hidden bets, losses, or accounts from people close to you?

If any of these sound familiar, it may be time to talk to someone who understands gambling disorder specifically.
