Crypto Trading Addiction

Cryptocurrency markets operate around the clock, with price swings dramatic enough to produce euphoria and devastation within hours. For compulsive gamblers, the combination of accessibility and volatility is a dangerous mix.

What makes crypto particularly difficult to recognize is the veneer of legitimacy it projects. It looks like investing complete with charts, research, terminology, and a community that reinforces the behavior. Many people in serious trouble with crypto have never once thought of themselves as gambling. The same is increasingly true of options and leveraged trading, where the line between speculation and wagering has all but disappeared.

The rush of the position, the compulsive checking, the doubling down after losses, the secrecy as the numbers get worse are all familiar patterns in gambling disorder.

Can I be addicted to Crypto?
  • Do you check prices compulsively — first thing in the morning, during meals, in the middle of the night?
  • Have you moved money you couldn’t afford to lose — savings, bills, borrowed funds — into positions to recover losses?
  • Do you take larger or riskier positions after losing, convinced the next trade will make it back?
  • Have you hidden the size of your positions or losses from people close to you?

If any of these sound familiar, it may be time to talk to someone who understands gambling disorder specifically.
