When Gambling and Subtance Use Collide

Gambling addiction and substance use disorders overlap more than almost any other pairing. Alcohol, illicit drugs, and prescription drug misuse each intensify gambling by lowering inhibitions, extending sessions, and deepening losses. Gambling environments often pair the two seeking to exploit this very relationship. When one addiction goes quiet, the other frequently escalates to fill the gap.

This is why so many people arrive at Clear Odds Recovery after already completing a substance use program. They did the work, got sober, and relapsed months later, at least in part, because their gambling was never screened for or treated. Most addiction treatment still doesn’t ask about gambling. We treat the full picture, because recovery that addresses only half the problem rarely lasts. The pages below cover the substances we most often see alongside gambling addiction.
